But pinpointing the culprit has been difficult, and controversial. The perpetrators, this new work suggests, were not asteroids, volcanoes, or raging coal fires, all of which have been implicated previously. Rather, they were a form of microbes — specifically, methane-producing archaea called Methanosarcina — that suddenly bloomed explosively in the oceans, spewing prodigious amounts of methane into the atmosphere and dramatically changing the climate and the chemistry of the oceans.
Volcanoes are not entirely off the hook, according to this new scenario; they have simply been demoted to accessories to the crime. The reason for the sudden, explosive growth of the microbes, new evidence shows, may have been their novel ability to use a rich source of organic carbon, aided by a sudden influx of a nutrient required for their growth: First, geochemical evidence shows an exponential or even faster increase of carbon dioxide in the oceans at the time of the so-called end-Permian extinction.
Second, genetic evidence shows a change in Methanosarcina at that time, allowing it to become a major producer of methane from an accumulation of carbon dioxide in the water. Finally, sediments show a sudden increase in the amount of nickel deposited at exactly this time. The carbon deposits show that something caused a significant uptick in the amount of carbon-containing gases — carbon dioxide or methane — produced at the time of the mass extinction. But calculations by the MIT team showed that these eruptions were not nearly sufficient to account for the carbon seen in the sediments.
The growth of microbial populations is among the few phenomena capable of increasing carbon production exponentially, or even faster. But if living organisms belched out all that methane, what organisms were they, and why did they choose to do so at that time? Previous studies had only placed this event sometime in the last million years. Given the right conditions, this genetic acquisition set the stage for the microbe to undergo a dramatic growth spurt, rapidly consuming a vast reserve of organic carbon in the ocean sediments.

This story has really struck a cord, thank you for sharing this link and supplying our first 20, visitor day! A transcribed letter from Robert Tjian From now on, I or someone designated by me will take attendance at group meetings starting at 9: If you are not there, I will not sign your salary sheets. The frequency of vacation, time taken off and other non-lab activities is bordering on the ridiculous.
In case you forgot, the standard amount of time you are supposed to take is 2 weeks a year total, including Christmas. I also want to say that the average lab citizenship and community spirit of keeping the lab in functioning order is at an all-time low.

Nov 20, · I’m wondering if it’s considered inappropriate for a postdoc to date a student in their laboratory? Page 1 of 1: I hope no one minds my asking this, since I know professors dating students is considered very inappropriate – not only because of the age difference, but because they have hiring/grading authority too.
I think, apart from our own company — nothing in our lives really lasts forever. What if I stay alone forever? Maybe a few max. If you are actively looking, it will very rarely be much longer. Step one — change your thoughts: What grounds you have to believe you will stay single? Think about your life 5 or 10 years back. All the big things that happened in that period. Were you single all the time?
The most truthful answer might be: Most post-docs have long distance relationships, hardly any date outside of academia or even their own field, out of selection distance can be tough ; many do let those fester, but, distance is great at making things fine when you are together, and provides a peaceful justification for breakups. In general, post-docs tend to be reasoned people, who rarely got anywhere with violence or yelling anyway—but who made bold decisions, and refused more opportunities for Nobel prizes than they can remember, so… it happens a lot.
So essentially ladies, all of those extra years of school you endured were totally useless as far as your dating life is concerned. The good news is, we don’t think this is a sign that men don’t find high achieving women attractive — after all, female MDs were the second most liked.
Figure out what you want to do after your PhD. Are you considering the next step as a step towards settling down with your family, including a decent salary and job security? Do you want to do more clinical or technology-driven work? These are all important considerations which can help you narrow down your search, and keep in mind that there is no right or wrong answer: Or you may eye industry more seriously, if a decent salary is equally or more important to you than the scientific question.
Consider it like picking your dating site: The first one tells you about the science, whether the lab is more technology-driven, how productive the lab is over time… The online presence of the lab can give you pointers what is most important for the PI: Does the PI seem vested in the personal wellbeing of the people are there pictures of lab outings, or a twitter feed highlighting recent events involving lab members? How openly is the science communicated: And finally, if you get a chance to informally chat to a PI before you apply eg at a conference or after a seminar what kind of vibe do you get?
Be prepared and invest the time to analyse all these aspects of the groups you could potentially be interested in. For example, when I was looking for a position, I used all three aspects as starting points: I also used google searches and conferences to find PIs who seemed to be doing the kind of stuff I was curious about and then used their papers to gauge the science.
Ancient Egyptians may have given cats the personality to conquer the world
A cat in a domestic setting—eating under a dining table—sometime after B. In the centuries that followed, cats became a fixture of Egyptian paintings and sculptures, and were even immortalized as mummies, as they rose in status from rodent killer to pet to god. Historians took all this as evidence that the ancient Egyptians were the first to domesticate the feline.

Andrew Dalby Seeing this my chances of tenure are zero. Unless I suddenly win a Nobel prize. The reality is also that you need to be a follower of the current fad. There is no point being in a field which is poorly looked upon or poorly funded. Your chances are even better if you are part of a powerful clique within a significant field. Then you will get tenure no matter how incapable you are.
So this applies for choosing a graduate advisor. Pick a big name and ride their coat-tails to tenure. Now it may not be literally:

Steelpan music as a practice of knowing Starting date: Discarded gallon oil barrels were used for music-making in s colonial Trinidad and Tobago; a period deeply shaped by discrimination of its performers. Often standing at the beginning of personal and political consciousness, music empowered performers, giving a sense of self-regard and -respect by mixing and transforming materials and musical structures, forming a symphonic steelorchestra.
This project explores ways of knowing in music -making , examining how a markedly musical way of being in, and relating to, the world is experienced in steelpan music. Concentrating on feelings that emerge in musical experiences, this project asks:
As a postdoc I met a couple of interesting potential dating partners, but they weren’t interested in getting involved with someone who had to move across the country in a couple of years. I then began a tenure-track job in a rather small, quiet city.
It is an excellent question, especially at the start of the conference and job season. O, you graduate students! What am I going to do with you? How am I going to explain to you all of the ways that you sabotage and undermine yourselves, with the best of intentions, and with complete lack of self-awareness? So I will do what I can.
I will list the ways that grad students act like grad students. I will name the behavior, describe it, and then explain how and why that behavior sabotages you in a job market situation. You drone on and on about your dissertation. Stop talking about your dissertation!!!!!

Subglacial till, flutes, drumlins, overridden moraines Some deposits with a coarse, sandy to boulder-gravel texture. Till, glaciotectonised sediments Till, glaciotectonite, complex till stratigraphies Roche moutonnees, striated and polished bedrock Little evidence of fluvial reworking, but aeolian reworking may be common. Small islands and ice-free areas, such as James Ross Island, are characterised by small moraines made by polythermal glaciers.
However, on the continental shelf, there are large landforms generated by ice streams at the Last Glacial Maximum LGM. The next section contrasts these different environments and their landforms. The area was glaciated during the Last Glacial Maximum , with cosmogenic nuclide exposure ages indicating recession of the main glacier ice around 11, to years ago see ice sheet evolution. The landscape is now characterised by permafrost see Periglaciation [3, 4], with small cold and polythermal glaciers, and periglacial landforms, such as rock glaciers, protalus ramparts, patterned ground, snow patches and small ephemeral streams.
The most obvious glacier landforms on James Ross Island are ice-cored moraines around small glaciers on Ulu Peninsula. These glaciers are surrounded by sharp-crested moraines with a core of glacier ice. The glacier ice is stratified with blue and white, bubble-rich ice and debris-rich bands, suggesting that it is basal glacier ice.
The crests of the moraines range from sharp-crested to chaotic, with the ice wasting and melting in situ. The buried glacier ice means that water cannot drain away, and many small frozen and unfrozen lakes and ponds are impounded on the moraines. Down-wasting and melting ice-cored moraine.
