This number can be used to date a guitar and in some cases tell where it was made. Serial numbers tend to be stamped or written somewhere on the headstock or neck joint of the guitar. On some acoustic guitars, the serial number is on the inside of the sound hole. Serial numbers are often at least four digits long, and they sometimes include letters. Search the area around the serial number for a date stamp.
Not all guitar brands use date stamps, but if you find one, you have your answer.

Terada made the Fender Japan acoustic guitars such as the Fender Catalina. At the result of production delay during this Fujigen new facility expansion, Dyna Gakki took over some of the production of the Japanese Fender models which resulted in a CIJ logo being used on some Japanese Fenders instead of a MIJ logo.

The older FERNANDES guitars do have serial numbers on occasion, and can be found on the neck plates of the Revival series Stratocasters and Telecasters, but .
They have been making guitars since the early ‘s at the FijugenGakki plant. At first, they didn’t have the hardware to make really good, exact replicas, but by or so, they had the correct-style hardware to match their excellent craftsmanship, and they put out some killer replicas. They beat Tokai to the lawsuit race by at least 5 years.
Eventually, as the company found that the demand for their popular replicas grew and that the size of the production was getting too large, they relinquished their Stratocaster division to Fender Japan in late Greco still retained the business of selling great Gibson clones and other brand knockoffs of extraordinary high quality up until They are becoming extremely rare and the demand is getting greater by the month for these older Greco guitars.
Many guitar magazines printed in Japan recently illustrate this demand. Jul 17, · I’m no expert on Fernandes but a lot of MIJ guitars date by the serial number. Yours would be Dec A= Jan up to L= Dec 0 = 80 the first digit is the year.
This is one of the most frustrating questions from the MIJ collector. People often make the mistake of citing the American or European importer as the ‘maker’ of the guitar, when in fact several Japanese manufacturers were producing badged guitars out of their plants and shipping them to America and Europe to sell. Japanese manufacturers made multiple badges at the same plant, many of whom resemble each other closely. Some manufacturers merged or changed hands over the years which added to the confusion, sometime merging with another maker, only to pick up their name later.
In some cases a manufacturer would farm out production to various manufacturers, making it still more difficult to know who made the guitar in your hands. Parts from other guitars would be used in the making of a particular badge for a period of time because it was all the manufacturer had to hand And sometimes, the guitar which is supposed to be an MIJ guitar is actually made elsewhere Korea, Indonesia because production was moved during this period in history.
This page is a work in progress and as new information is revealed it will be added to the list. But I can’t do this alone, folks. See a guitar not listed? In some cases I won’t know because the badge you have may be extremely rare and virtually unknown to even seasoned collectors.
